Du Bois Lecture: W.E.B. Du Bois Memorial Plaque @ the HU – Ceremony
Since January 2022, an artistically designed memorial plaque from the Department of American Studies has been commemorating W.E.B. Du Bois (1868–1963) in the main building of the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. The sociologist, historian, journalist and civil rights activist studied at what is now the Humboldt-Universität from 1892–1894. The artist Jean-Ulrick Désert approached this commemorative piece in a remarkable way. This event now belatedly ensures the ceremonial unveiling of the artwork and reflects on the significance of commemorating a Black scientist and activist at the HU. Alongside Jean-Ulrick Désert, attendees will also hear from Du Bois’ biographer, David Levering Lewis, Du Bois’ great-grandson Arthur McFarlane, and representatives of the US Embassy, the Humboldt-Universität, and various organisations. An artistic performance by Maroula Blades will round off the event.
This event will be held mainly in English.
