W.E.B. Du Bois Lecture Series: Plant Papi Politics: Queer Latinx Artists Re-grounding Nature
Alexis Salas (University of Arkansas)
Euro-American landscape painting offers an extensive cis het patriarchal view. The long connection of brown and queer people with the earth, Salas argues, enables a vista refiguring those power dynamics. Using a critical gender and race framework, Salas considers how the work of several queer Latinx artists can be considered in tandem with larger social phenomenon such as plant parenting, clean eating, and community gardens as well as how queer Latinx connects to spirituality, survival amidst settler colonialism, and renewed uses of the Anthropocene.
Dr. Alexis Salas specializes in Latin American and Latino/a/e/x art and visual culture. Dr. Salas simultaneously holds the positions of 2024–25 Terra Visiting Professor at Freie Universität Berlin and Endowed Assistant Professor of Arts of the Americas in Art History at the University of Arkansas.
