The Science Campus for Nature and Societyis home to the joint "Berlin School of Public Engagement and Open Science" of the Museum für Naturkunde and the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. It will be an experimental space, platform, education and training centre for new ways in science communication. A three-year pilot phase, funded by the Robert Bosch Foundation, has already been approved.

In the field of public engagement (PE) and open science in Germany, the Berlin School is to make a leading contribution to promoting the dialogue between research and the public in order to critically and systematically accompany issues relating to society as a whole. To this end, scientific processes should be opened up and processes and results of scientific work should be conveyed in an innovative, interactive and target-group-oriented manner. In addition, incentives, opportunities and skills should be created for target groups and researchers at all career levels to enter into dialogue. These opening processes should ultimately themselves be scientifically monitored.
