International Conference: Immigration Law and Policy, Border Control and Migrant Deaths
Thousands of migrants are dying every year in Europe in deeply troubling circumstances. Most die whilst attempting to cross maritime borders but there are also many instances of deaths in refugee camps, immigration detention centres and during attempts to cross Europe’s internal and external land borders.
This two-day online conference will explore the relationship between migration and border control law and policy, and migrant deaths within and close to the borders of Europe, as well as relevant practice and research in the area of contentious death investigation.
Conference papers will address a diverse range of relevant topics, such as the implementation of the UN Global Compacts for migration and on refugees during the pandemic, immigration detention, pushbacks, the externalisation of border controls, migrant and refugee vulnerability, the treatment of migrants with disabilities and State responsibility for deaths.
The Conference is funded by the Volkswagen Foundation as part of the research project ‘Refugee Lives Matter: Protecting the human rights of migrants and refugees through international and regional obligations to investigate deaths’.
